Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited hemoglobinopathies. hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) is the only curative therapy for SCD, but some patients will have a matched donor siblings. Patients with SCD mostly of African origin, and therefore tend to find a suitable unrelated donors in international registries. Using HaploStats, we estimate HLA haplotypes for 185 patients with SCD (n = 116 from the center of Brazil; n = 69 of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) centers) and haplotypes classified ethnic origin.

Next, we assess the probability of finding the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matched unrelated adult donor (MUD), given the locus of A, B and DRB1 (6/6), in the international registries. Most haplotype is Africa, but Brazil showed the ethnic mix of higher than patients EBMT. Nevertheless, the possibility of finding at least one potential donor 6/6 allele was 47% for both groups.
